Andre 3000 To Play Jimi Hendrix In Biopic?

Outkast rapper will play legendary ax man, according to an online report.By Kara Warner Andre 3000 Photo: Johnny Nunez/WireImage The much-discussed yet long-delayed Jimi Hendrix biopic looks to be finally moving forward with a credible star attached: none other than Outkast's Andre Benjamin. According to a report from the Irish Film and Television Network published on Monday (May 7), the Outkast rapper has been tapped to play the legendary ax man in an upcoming biopic titled "All Is by My Side." Set during Hendrix's time in England between 1966 and 1967, the film follows the icon as he began work on his debut, Are You Experienced, an album widely regarded by critics to feature some of the greatest guitar music ever created. The feature film will be written and directed by John Ridley, whose previous work includes the screenplays for "Red Tails" and "U-Turn," as well as story credit on David O. Russell's "Three Kings." Although he's more well-known for his contributions to music as part of the Grammy-winning hip-hop duo, Benjamin (a.k.a. Andre 3000) has had roles in several movies, including "Semi-Pro," "Idlewild," "Four Brothers," and appeared on the FX TV series "The Shield." "Considering his just-passable acting in 'Idlewild,' the jury's still out on whether Andre can carry a movie on his own," offered MTV News senior writer Gil Kaufman. "But given his virtual retirement from music since that movie's release — 'Semi-Pro' was a small step in the right direction — and word that he's been taking acting lessons, the Hendrix movie could do for him what 'Dreamgirls' did for Jennifer Hudson. "Andre has the musical chops, the artistic sensibility and a devotion to his craft that makes me think he wouldn't take on this iconic role without knowing that he had something deep to offer," Kaufman continued. "Plus, as he's proven over and over with his many note-perfect, bulls-eye features on songs since he stopped recording his own albums, when he shoots, he shoots to kill." MTV News reached out to Benjamin's representatives about the report but had not received comment at press time. "All Is by My Side," not to be confused with Legendary Pictures' onetime plans to make a Hendrix biopic, is reportedly in pre-production with principal photography set to begin in three weeks in Dublin and Wicklow. Oscar Winners: Who's Had The Steepest Drop?

Renee Zellweger, Adrien Brody and others have faded since their night of Oscar glory.By Kevin P. Sullivan Adrien Brody Photo: Steve Granitz/WireImage Oscar night is supposed to be the night where dreams come true and careers are made, but for many actors over the years, it has marked the beginning of a downward trend. Among the list of past winners, you'll find some of Hollywood's most timeless faces. But you'll also find some names that have faded since their night of Oscar glory. Through no fault of their own, some actors have struggled to escape from under the weight of an Academy Award win — especially if it came early in their character. Despite their best efforts, they have yet to repeat their previous levels of success and live up to the title "Academy Award winner." Here are some of the steepest falls for Oscar winners in recent years: Hilary Swank
Despite two wins for Best Actress, Hilary Swank's career maps out with two peaks and large valleys in between. Not counting her winning roles in "Boys Don't Cry" and "Million Dollar Baby," none of Swank's leading roles have caught much traction either financially or critically. Her more commercial choices like "P.S. I Love You" and "The Reaping" failed to capture their respective target audiences, and Oscar bait like "Conviction" and "Amelia" saw only mild critical response. Cuba Gooding, Jr.
His iconic role in "Jerry Maguire" and the catchphrase that followed ("Show me the money!") marked the beginning of a steep and fast drop in Gooding's career. Embarrassing roles in films like "Snow Dogs" and "Boat Trip" became examples of how far an Academy Award winner could fall. Gooding has made some notable appearances in films like "Red Tails" and "Pearl Harbor," but his turn in "Radio" earned ridicule from Robert Downey Jr.'s character in "Tropic Thunder." Renee Zellweger
After two previous nominations, Zellweger won her golden statue for "Cold Mountain" but has yet to earn similar praise since. She earned three nominations in as many years, but since then, the accolades have dried up. Her major starring roles in "Miss Potter" and "New in Town" did not live up to the critical or financial standards set by "Chicago" or "Bridget Jones' Diary." Adrien Brody
Though he had a notable cameo in this year's critical darling "Midnight in Paris," Brody has picked his movie roles selectively, appearing only once or twice a year and not always as the star. He found moderate box-office success as the second leading man behind a giant ape in Peter Jackson's "King Kong" remake, but starring vehicles like "The Jacket" fell flat. Kim Basinger
Though Basinger's decreasing presence in Hollywood after a decade as a blond big-screen bombshell may have coincided with her Oscar win, the signs of a dropoff after are there. Her role in "L.A. Confidential" became iconic and one of the film's key images, but Basinger's career began to lose steam soon after. She starred in minor dramas like "I Dreamed of Africa" and "The Door in the Floor." She even made a memorable turn as Eminem's mother in "8 Mile," but smaller roles kept her from the former spotlight. The MTV Movies team has the 2012 Oscars covered! 'The Grey' Captures #1 At Weekend Box Office

atherine Heigl's 'One for the Money' and 'Man on a Ledge' also make the top 5.By Ryan J. Downey Liam Neeson in "The Grey" Photo: Open Road Films It must be wintertime, because Liam Neeson is #1 at the box office again. Following the January 2010 release of "Taken" and the February 2011 success of "Unknown," Liam Neeson returned to theaters in another action-heavy role with "The Grey" over the weekend and beat back all other contenders. "The Grey," about a group of oil workers stalked by wolves while stranded in the Alaskan wilderness, debuted with an estimated $20 million. Katherine Heigl's "One for the Money" had a decent $11.8 million opening, which placed the PG-13 action comedy at #3 on the box-office scorecard. The Sam Worthington-led thriller "Man on a Ledge," on the other hand, opened at #5 with just $8.3 million. Having proven his biopic mettle with heady fare like "Schindler's List" and "Kinsey," 59-year-old Neeson has entered a career groove playing rough-and-tumble anti-heroes in barn-burning action thrillers. While its opening numbers were slightly lower than "Unknown" ($21.9 million) and "Taken" ($24.7), "The Grey" enjoyed the best critical reviews of the action trio. "['The Grey'] takes death seriously, and partly as a consequence, every moment, every frame, feels alive," wrote New York Times film critic and former "At the Movies" co-host A.O. Scott. The same cannot be said for "One for the Money," which at press time sat at just 3 percent on Rotten Tomatoes' "Tomatometer," which assigns ratings based on reviews from film critics. "Heigl's comic timing is solid, and she knows her limitations well enough, but there's a hollowness at the movie's center, right where Heigl's heart should be," wrote Sam Adams of The Onion A.V. Club. The film's opening was lower than Heigl's 2010 rom-coms "Killers" ($15.8 million) and "Life as We Know It" ($13.2 million). "Avatar" and "Clash of the Titans" star Sam Worthington received top billing in "Man on a Ledge," which sat at 25 percent on the Tomatometer at press time. Worthington plays a wrongly accused man who hatches an elaborate scheme to prove his innocence. The last movie co-starring Worthington was the war criminal/ spy drama "The Debt," which opened with $9.9 million. The rest of the weekend's top five included "Underworld Awakening" at #2 with $12.5 million, which gave the fourth entry in the vampires-and-werewolves franchise a two-week total of $45.1 million, and "Red Tails" at #4 with $10.4 million. The George Lucas-produced World War II flick has made $33.8 million since it opened last weekend. Lucas financed the film's $58 million budget himself. "The Descendants" and "The Artist" both received a boost from their respective award season attention. George Clooney has racked up trophies for his starring role in the Alexander Payne-directed "Descendants," which expanded from 600 theaters to 2,000 and took in another $6.5 million for an 11-week total of $58.8 million. "The Artist," meanwhile, spiked 42 percent from last week. The Weinstein Co.-produced silent film has made $16.7 million after big wins at several award shows, including three prizes at the Golden Globes. 'Red Tails' Proves All-Black Cast Can Soar At Box Office

'I feel like this was a matter of just proving them wrong,' Ne-Yo tells MTV News of the George Lucas-produced flick.By Rob Markman Ne-Yo in "Red Tails" Photo: Lucasfilm Ltd. It wasn't easy getting "Red Tails." into theaters, but singer/actor Ne-Yo believes that after opening at #2 at the box office, it was well worth the fight. "I feel like we definitely did what we set out to do which was make sure these incredible men, the Tuskegee Airmen, got the recognition that they deserved for the incredible things that they did for this country," Ne-Yo told MTV News of the George Lucas-produced film on Wednesday. "And [we] proved to Hollywood that an ensemble cast of black faces can put asses in the seats, basically," he laughed. "So I feel like we served our purpose." "Red Tails" tells the story of the Tuskegee Airmen, a group of African American fighter pilots who battled deep-rooted racism, while fighting in World War II. Both Terrence Howard and Cuba Gooding star in the flick, while Ne-Yo, Method Man and Tristan Wilds have supporting roles. The historical piece hit theaters January 20, the Friday before Martin Luther King Day and opened second behind "Underworld: Awakening." Not bad for the singer/songwriter, who was also named senior vice president of A&R at Motown Records. Considering the movie wasn't especially well-received by critics, "Red Tails" did well in its first weekend, surpassing initial expectations. Lucas appeared on "The Daily Show With John Stewart" earlier this month and claimed that major studios showed no interest in the film when he went to pitch it. "It's because it's an all-black movie," he said. "There's no major white roles in it at all. It's one of the first all-black action pictures ever made." "We've come a long way from when Martin was marching in the streets and getting rocks thrown at him. We've come a very, very long way," Ne-Yo said. "However, even with that being said we got a long way to go. As a Black person, period, we're kinda constantly in a state of proving, which is something that I came to wraps with a long time ago." Despite the studios' lack of interest in the film, Ne-Yo decided to let the success of "Red Tails" speak for itself. "At the end of the day, you complain about it, or you prove them wrong," he said. "I feel like this was a matter of just proving them wrong." Check out everything we've got on "Red Tails."
