Nikki Reed And Hayden Panettiere Join Bret Easton Ellis Thriller

The 'Twilight' actress and 'Heroes' star set to stir up screams in 'Downers Grove.'By Eric Ditzian Nikki Reed Photo: James Lacsina/ MTV News While Nikki Reed gets a breather from shooting "Breaking Dawn" — the production has shifted to Brazil with Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson — the 22-year-old actress is making plans for another big-screen project. Reed and former "Heroes" star Hayden Panettiere have signed on to star in a thriller called "Downers Grove," according to Variety. Based on the novel by Michael Hornberg and adapted for the screen by Bret Easton Ellis, the story follows a cursed Chicago high school that suffers the peculiar death of a senior each year before graduation. There's no word about which roles Reed and Panettiere will play, but the novel focuses on two main characters: Chrissie, a senior from a troubled home, and her sexually adventurous best friend, Tracy. "Downers Grove" is set to begin production in the spring of 2011 in Louisiana — the same tax-friendly state where "Breaking Dawn" has set up shop. Nelson McCormick ("Prom Night") will direct, and Rebecca De Mornay also has taken on a role. "The combination of the thriller genre, a very popular and well-known cast, Bret Easton Ellis' dynamic screenplay and Nelson McCormick's incredible skill with young actors and ability to create tension and terror on-screen is just unbeatable," said Kirk D'Amico, chief of Myriad Pictures, which acquired the rights to the property. Panettiere has had mixed success on the big screen since her breakout turn on "Heroes": both "I Love You, Beth Cooper" and the animated children's tale "Alpha and Omega" tanked at the box office. Following the cancelation of "Heroes" earlier this year, she'll next be seen in "Scream 4." Reed, meanwhile, recently wrapped work on "Catch .44" opposite Bruce Willis and Malin Akerman, and will be busy with "Breaking Dawn" well into next year. 'The Town' Rules Supreme At The Weekend Box Office

Ben Affleck's crime thriller wins the weekend, while M. Night Shyamalan's return to horror fails to scare up a win.By Josh Wigler Slaine, Ben Affleck, Jeremy Renner and Owen Burke in "The Town" Photo: Warner Bros. The Box-Office Top Five
#1 "The Town" ($23.8 million)
#2 "Easy A" ($18.2 million)
#3 "Devil" ($12.6 million)
#4 "Resident Evil: Afterlife" ($10.1 million)
#5 "Alpha and Omega" ($9.2 million) Last week, "Resident Evil: Afterlife" scored an easy first-place finish at the box office thanks to a dearth of other new competitors. But that wasn't the case this past weekend, with brand-new films emerging from the likes of Ben Affleck, M. Night Shyamalan and Emma Stone to give last week's reigning champion a run for its money. Leading the pack of this weekend's new releases was "The Town," Affleck's second directing effort and already his most successful to date. Affleck also stars in the Boston crime thriller about a bank robber who falls in love with one of his hostages, much to the chagrin of his fellow criminals. "The Town" scored a $23.8 million haul from Friday through Sunday, earning enough in one weekend to eclipse the entire $20.3 million run of Affleck's directorial debut, "Gone Baby Gone." "Easy A" took second place with a strong $18.2 million. Starring Emma Stone, Cam Gigandet and Amanda Bynes, director Will Gluck's modern retelling of "The Scarlet Letter" was shot on a modest budget of $8 million, with its weekend performance already pushing it $10.2 million past the profit line. M. Night Shyamalan's return to the horror genre with "Devil" wasn't enough to scare moviegoers into theaters. "Devil," the first entry in the "Night Chronicles," managed a mere $12.5 million debut despite early positive buzz and a clear marketing push. "Alpha and Omega," Lionsgate's newest animated family film, about a pack of wolves, scored $9.2 million to land in fifth place. Last week's "Resident Evil" held on to a top five spot with a $10.1 million performance. Upcoming Releases Zack Snyder gets animated with "Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole," while Michael Douglas assumes the role of Gordon Gekko once again in "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps." 'Resident Evil' Enjoys Solid 'Afterlife' At The Box Office

Fourth entry in video game franchise takes top prize during quiet box-office weekend.By Josh Wigler Milla Jovovich in "Resident Evil: Afterlife" Photo: Sony Pictures The Box-Office Top Five
#1 "Resident Evil: Afterlife" ($27.7 million)
#2 "Takers" ($6.1 million)
#3 "The American" ($5.9 million)
#4 "Machete" ($4.2 million)
#5 "Going the Distance" ($3.8 million)
If there's one thing that zombies enjoy more than brains, it's money. And the flesh-eating monsters of "Resident Evil: Afterlife" got a whole lot of both as the only new wide release to hit theaters this past weekend. Director Paul W.S. Anderson and actress Milla Jovovich's fourth entry in the popular video game franchise proved that the series still has plenty of life in it with a first-place finish worth $27.7 million. "Afterlife" played on an estimated 4,700 screens at 3,203 locations, with just over 2,000 of those venues showing off the movie's well-received 3-D capabilities and 141 in IMAX 3-D. Not only did "Afterlife" top the domestic box office, but it also managed to dethrone "Inception" overseas with $46.2 million earned from foreign markets. The success of "Afterlife" all but guarantees that the "Resident Evil" franchise will soldier on. Indeed, Jovovich informed New York magazine that a fifth film will "definitely" be made, with plans to solicit story ideas from fans. "We've been talking to a lot of fans on Twitter and stuff, so it's probably going to be one of the first movies where we really talk to fans to see what they want, and what characters they want to see," she said. "It's going to be a more interactive process." Beyond "Afterlife," it was a fairly bleak weekend at the box office. "Takers" continued to perform well in its third weekend, while both "The American" and "Machete" suffered significant drops of more than 50 percent in their second weekend frames. "Going the Distance" rounded out the top five with $3.8 million. Upcoming Releases Next weekend, Ben Affleck invites moviegoers to visit "The Town," while M. Night Shyamalan puts the fear of the "Devil" inside of an elevator. Animated comedy "Alpha and Omega" and the Emma Stone-starring romantic comedy "Easy A" round out the weekend's newcomers.
