'Spinning Gold' follows life of label co-founder Neil Bogart.By Jocelyn Vena Justin Timberlake He once played Napster co-founder Sean Parker in "The Social Network," and now he's getting ready to play another real-life entrepreneur. Deadline Hollywood reports that Justin Timberlake will play '70s record producer and Casablanca Records co-founder Neil Bogart in a new biopic. "Spinning Gold" will take a close look at Bogart's career as a record executive who launched the careers of acts like KISS, Parliament, Donna Summer and the Village People. "This is saga about a young dreamer who started with nothing and came of age in the '60s and '70s, believing anything was possible and every risk was worth taking," said Tim Bogart, Neil's son and the film's writer. He said the film is "literally three decades in the making." Bogart died of cancer in 1982, at the age of 39. Bogart added, "We needed a young actor who can carry this picture. ... When Justin walked into the room, that was the moment I had been waiting for 29 years. He has the exact same energy as my father, the same glimmer in his eye." A director has yet to be attached to the project, which is set to shoot in 2012. Album plans are also underway. Fans hoping Timberlake will head back to the studio to record new music will be sad to see his film roster keeps getting filled with new projects. In November, his sci-fi flick, "In Time," hits theaters. "To be honest, my plan would have probably been to do another record, probably right about now. I never stop considering myself a musician. To me, it's my bread and butter," he said in a recent interview with ShortList. "And I mean that in a personal way. I don't mean that it finances my 'acting hobbies.' I joke with my friends that I should have a business card saying, 'David Fincher put me in a movie,' because 'Bad Teacher' got a blessing due to 'The Social Network,' and then 'Friends With Benefits' came out of that. "All the movies I've done were just opportunities that came up, but now that they're all coming out back-to-back, people think, 'Oh, he's trying to make a statement by having an acting career,' " he continued. "But it's not like that for me. I don't ever want to stop doing music." For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com. 'I don't ever want to stop doing music,' JT tells U.K. magazine.By James Montgomery Justin Timberlake in his "SexyBack" music video Photo: Getty Images If he had his way, Justin Timberlake would probably be doing promo for the follow-up to 2006's FutureSex/LoveSounds right about now; it's just that these pesky movie roles keep getting in the way. That's the takeaway from a new interview Timberlake gave to British magazine Timberlake's musical output with the group at a restaurant he co-owns in New York City. But he maintains that he never really decided to put his solo career on the shelf. It just sort of shook out that way, much to the dismay of his fans, who have begun making impassioned (and slightly profane) pleas for his return. "The only conscious decision I made was that I didn't want to do a movie about a musician, because I felt like that was presumptuous," he told the magazine. "If 'Bad Teacher' had come out before 'The Social Network,' it may have curbed it a bit because people got used to seeing me on 'Saturday Night Live' and thought, 'Well, he's kind of funny.' I never cared about being taken seriously as a musician." So, when can fans expect to hear new music from Timberlake? Well, from the sound of things, it may be a while. For the immediate future, he's focused on just disappearing for a while. "I have nothing on my plate for the rest of the year. I'm getting sick of me," Timberlake said. "I realize that I'm in a really lucky place because, to be honest, I don't think I'm that good. I just want to make the right choices. You get to a certain age where you don't feel the need to be validated by your choices in your career. I want to be validated more by choices in my personal life." 'Dark of the Moon' becomes highest-grossing film of 2011.By Ryan J. Downey Shia LaBeouf and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in 'Transformers: Dark Of The Moon' Photo: Paramount "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" fended off competition from both an R-rated comedy and a family-friendly film as the third entry in the giant robot franchise maintained the #1 position at the box office with an estimated $47 million during its second weekend in theaters. "Transformers" passed "The Hangover II" to become the highest-grossing film of 2011 thus far with its 12-day domestic haul of $261 million and crossed the half-billion dollar mark worldwide. "Horrible Bosses" wasn't able to dethrone Michael Bay's CGI heavy explosion-fest but it does bear the distinction of being the only film in the top five with mostly favorable reviews from critics. Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day star in the black comedy, which opened at #2 with $28.1 million. "Bosses" outperformed any of the films released by its stars in 2010, but the debut of "Zookeeper" didn't rank highly in the filmography of Kevin James. Originally intended for a summer 2010 release, "Zookeeper" opened with $21 million to land at #3 on the box-office scorecard. Produced by Adam Sandler's Happy Madison (and featuring a monkey voiced by Sandler), the animal-heavy rom-com opened better than "The Dilemma" but didn't come close to "Paul Blart: Mall Cop." "Cars 2" dropped to #4 with $15.2 million. The animated sequel is the least-attended movie in Pixar's history and has a three-week total of $148.8 million. Cameron Diaz's "Bad Teacher" was #5 with $9 million for a three-week total of $78.7 million, which is almost four times its estimated production budget. This weekend's new releases include a little movie about a wizard named Harry Potter. Check out everything we've got on "Horrible Bosses." Michael Bay's third installment in the series had the highest-grossing July 4th debut ever.By Ryan J. Downey "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" Photo: Paramount Pictures There's no hiding the success of the "robots in disguise" franchise: "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" enjoyed the highest-grossing Fourth of July film debut ever over the weekend. Summer sequel mania was in full swing over the Independence Day holiday as the latest "Transformers" movie took in an estimated $97.5 million. "Transformers" beat the 2011 opening-weekend record previously set by "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," which just crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide. Director Michael Bay's third installment in the "Transformers" series took in more than $180 million during its six-day opening, which started with Tuesday night previews. While it beat the Independence Day record held by "Spider-Man 2" thanks to inflation and 3-D screenings, it fell short of the superhero sequel in terms of overall attendance and far behind the last "Transformers" opening as well. Only 38 percent of major critics found the film favorable, according to Rotten Tomatoes. Last weekend's big sequel, "Cars 2," suffered from the largest second-week drop in Pixar's history. The talking-car-centered animated kid flick fell 60 percent to #2 with an estimated $26.2 million, with an 11-day total of $123 million. Cameron Diaz's "Bad Teacher" was #3 on the box-office chart with $14.5 million for an 11-day total of $59.9 million. Critics have not been kind to "Larry Crowne," which opened at #4 with just $13.1 million. " 'Larry Crowne' has Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts and a good premise and a colorful supporting cast," wrote Roger Ebert. "But what it doesn't have is a reason for existing." The weekend's other new romantic comedy, Selena Gomez's "Monte Carlo," failed to even crack the top five with its $7.4 million debut. "Super 8" was #5 with $7.8 million. JJ Abrams' homage to co-producer Steven Spielberg's thrill-filled coming-of-age stories has earned more than $108 million in four weeks of release.
