James Franco Chalks Up Another Unconventional Side Hustle With Telenovela

Oscar nominee will appear on Nick at Nite's 'Hollywood Heights' this summer.By Jocelyn Vena James Franco Photo: Neilson Barnard/ Getty Images At this point, few things James Franco does in his career surprise anyone. But his latest gig might be an exception. The Oscar-nominated actor has agreed to appear on the Nick at Nite telenovela "Hollywood Heights." The gig was announced by the network on Wednesday, but further details about his appearance on the show were not released. The show will kick off in June, according to Vulture, and like any good telenovela, it will air five nights a week. Based on a Mexican soap opera, the show revolves around a shy girl who befriends a rock star (her crush) after winning a songwriting competition and ultimately becomes a pop star herself. For those playing at home, this is the latest unusual side hustle the actor has acquired recently. Aside from attending college at several prestigious universities across the country over the last few years, the actor has also appeared several times on the small screen since he bid his role as Daniel Desario on "Freaks and Geeks" goodbye back in the day. He also appeared on the soap opera "General Hospital," where he played an artist with mob ties. His character's name? Simply, Franco. In 2011, he hosted the Academy Awards alongside Anne Hathaway. While he had been nominated for his work in "127 Hours" that year, his performance as the show's host was met with mixed reviews. He also appeared on the NBC game show "Minute to Win It" along with Aron Ralston, whom he portrayed in "127 Hours." They played to benefit a charity. He is a published author and a film critic and worked behind the lens on several projects, including 2011's "Three's Company: The Drama," based on the hit sitcom from the 1970s, which was screened at Sundance that year. In addition to several multimedia projects, he shot music videos for R.E.M. for their tracks "Blue" and "That Someone Is You." He also appeared in a music video for his own musical project, Kalup and Franco. While he pursues some of his more unusual side projects, he is also attached to several movies, including "Maladies," "Lovelace," "Oz: The Great and Powerful" and the currently in production "Spring Breakers," with Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens. Fans might also still be waiting to see that sex tape he copped to back in August 2011. Related Videos MTV Rough Cut: James Franco And 'Your Highness'

Jennifer Aniston Calls Justin Theroux 'Beautiful'

In 'MTV First,' the 'Wanderlust' star gushes about her beau's 'leading man quality.'By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Jennifer Aniston, Paul Rudd, Justin Theroux and Malin Akerman in "Wanderlust" Photo: Universal When "Wanderlust" stars Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd sat down with MTV News' Josh Horowitz for "MTV First," the stars opened up about the film, which opens this weekend, and of course that much-discussed Aniston nude scene. They also talked about someone who will likely have everyone buzzing when they leave the theater: Aniston's co-star and real-life leading man, Justin Theroux. Aniston said Theroux is a "far cry" from his hippie-dippie character in the film, which revolves around an uptight New York couple who decide to shake up their lives and end up at a commune. Rudd and Aniston play that couple just looking for a change of pace. "I didn't recognize him actually, when were at the camera test," she continued. "We were at the camera test and I did not recognize him because he's usually in leather and tight black jeans and black boots and he has this very specific look that, since I've known him, he's always had. But that's sort of what's so great [about him]." The actress continued that it's his ability to change so much from his real-life look (which veers more toward New York hipster chic than Boho-chic) and personality that makes him stand out in the film. "He has a beard; it's a healthy beard [in the film]. But what I think is so awesome about Justin is that he really just disappears," she said. " 'Your Highness' was so great, and even like in 'Zoolander,' I didn't know he was that crazy DJ. He sort of morphs into things, into characters and also has a leading-man quality, which I think is beautiful. He's just great." It seems that love for Theroux doesn't begin and end with Aniston. Rudd, who has worked with him in the past in "The Baxter," is equally charmed by his ability to portray guys who are not as smart as they think they are. "He's such a smart guy and he's so talented and good at playing [those] guys. What I love about him is his subtlety. He's kind of a master of subtlety," he said. "I've been a fan of his for years." 'The Sitter': The Reviews Are In!

Critics call Jonah Hill comedy an R-rated 'Adventures in Babysitting.'By Kara Warner Jonah Hill, Max Records and Landry Bender in "The Sitter" Photo: 20th Century Fox From the moment Fox unleashed the clever "Need a Sitter?" poster advertising Jonah Hill as a for-hire babysitter, we were intrigued to see what comedic genius might be born of the qualified actor/director combination of the "Superbad" star and "Pineapple Express" helmer David Gordon Green. Once the trailers hit, it was obvious audiences would be in for a raunchy, envelope-pushing experience, the effectiveness of which has the critical masses a bit divided and sitting at a 21 percent rating over at Rotten Tomatoes. Read on as we sift through "The Sitter" reviews: Plot Twists, Turns and Caveats
" 'The Sitter' is wickedly absurd. Every parent's fears about the caretaker brought in at the last minute get amped up here. So getting one's shorts in a knot about the situations that sitter Noah Griffith (Hill) puts youngsters Slater, Blithe and Rodrigo in is a waste of ire. The comedy breaks in viewers from the get-go by offering a twist on R-rated bedroom activity. Later, after Noah is sweetly guilt-tripped into a babysitting gig by his mom (Jessica Hecht), the movie proceeds to an ill-advised drug run. It's a comedy with kids, not for kids. ... Which leads us to a second caveat: This comedy is shameless about race. From its rap and R&B soundtrack, to the casting of Wu-Tang Clan's Cliff "Method Man" Smith, to the in-your-face sistah Tina (played with nice vigor by Samira Wiley), it's clear this comedy is made by that generation of filmmakers freed by the omnipresence of hip-hop to be a little gangsta themselves." — Lisa Kennedy, The Denver Post The Performances
"Some of the sting is eased by Hill, who navigates this movie's wild ride through a raunchier 'Adventures in Babysitting' with a genuinely sweet sense of self-deprecation. Yes, he's a sadsack loser, but he knows it, and his honest acceptance of that makes him easy to take. He's also helped out by the great Sam Rockwell — who remains one of the consistently wildest and most daring actors out there — as Karl, a starved-for-affection drug dealer. And also aided by a surprising gay-pride subplot that delivers its own 'It Gets Better' message." — Stephen Witty, The Newark Star-Ledger Mixed Messages
"The filmmakers try desperately to skate that thin line between socially redeeming and wanton excess by having Noah dish out some bits of wisdom and occasionally indicate he might care about the kids. But it is very thin ice and Hill never finds his balance, to say nothing of his comic timing. Though table-turning 'The Ransom of Red Chief' themes abound, somehow the exploding toilet and all the other 'funny' mayhem, on which much of the film's humor rides, seem sad instead." — Betsy Sharkey, The Los Angeles Times The Final Word, Pro-Con-Pro Style
" 'I'm not Mary Poppins,' protests Jonah Hill's Noah. No, you're Elisabeth Shue, and 'The Sitter' is an unacknowledged remake of 'Adventures in Babysitting' with the raunch dial turned up to max. It's smart, funny, agreeably perverse and simultaneously abrupt and exhausting." — Kyle Smith, New York Post " 'The Sitter' plays like an R-rated homage to the 1980s comedy 'Adventures in Babysitting,' with some 'Date Night' and lots of filthy humor thrown in. Spiked with some loopily inspired supporting performances (Sam Rockwell turns up as a freaky, tweaky drug dealer running the world's most hilariously depraved coke den) and Hill's characteristically inspired improvisational asides, 'The Sitter' is an efficient but uneven programmer, whose most valuable contribution to the cinematic landscape is its blessedly brief 80-minute running time." — Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post "Hill is a strong comic, and this movie, considerably funnier than director Green's last, the execrable 'Your Highness' — low standard — allows the actor to show off his beautiful timing (also evident in 'Moneyball,' but without the hijinks). Screenwriters Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka have barely a screen credit between them, but they understand the Hill persona, a little whisper here, an off-the-cuff insult that lands as softly as a kiss and a nonplussed double take followed by a quick rejoinder. Noah is the fat guy who wears a plaid flannel shirt underneath a jacket opened to reveal a clashing plaid lining. He's also good and decent and open to admitting all of his faults. 'I had a monthlong, intense addiction to Robitussin,' he tells Slater, trying to put him at ease. 'The Sitter' is predicated on a belief that chunky Jonah Hill, or at least the persona he presents, is secretly supercool. While it turns out to be a wisp of a movie, on that front at least, it is persuasive." — Mary Pols, Time Check out everything we've got on "The Sitter." 'Dark Knight Rises' And More: 20 Best Trailers Of 2011

Teasers for 'Hunger Games' and 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2' also left us hungry for more.By Eric Ditzian Christian Bale in "The Dark Knight Rises" Photo: Warner Bros. Time, like the theatrical run of "Your Highness," has disappeared quickly this year. It's hard to believe it was almost 12 months ago that we were settling into our seats to check out Nicolas Cage's "Season of the Witch." That didn't work out so well. And so, as the MTV Movies team begins our look back at the cinematic year that was 2011, we're reminded that time is precious. We don't have much of it; we must use it wisely. That's why we're beginning our series of best-of stories with movie trailers — those neat little packages of footage that let us know in a few minutes' time whether the full movie is going to be worth it. Picking our 20 favorite trailers was a tough call; just look at the ones that didn't make it, like "The Avengers," "The Amazing Spider-Man," "Captain America: The First Avenger" and "Breaking Dawn - Part 1." In the end, though, we selected the trailers that truly stuck with us — some since the early days of the year and some newer ones that are sure to haunt us into next year. Read on for our picks for the 20 best movie trailers of 2011. 20. "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy"
The trailer teases everything the movie delivers — a slowly building whodunit of a plot, an ominous score, period details so depressingly '70s-era British that the footage should come with a voucher for lithium — while at the same time succeeding in one area where the movie falters: It's not pull-your-hair-out, whisper-to-the-person-next-to-you, throw-your-hands-up-in-defeat confusing. 19. "The Muppets"
An unlikely companion piece to the "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" teaser listed below, this "Muppets" trailer — one in a long line of pop-culture mash-ups — had the lovable felt creatures laser-beaming one message to viewers: Our movie may be rated PG, but we swear you'll totally dig it. And hey, if you want to get stoned in the parking lot beforehand, that's fine, dude. 18. "Battleship"
The "Battleship" trailer got a lot of crap when it dropped in July — was this just "Blue Crush" meets "Armageddon," with neither the former's sugary, shameless sex factor nor the latter's Bruce Willis? Instead let us float another way of viewing it: as an utterly wacky, probably nonsensical yet potentially blockbustering summer movie for a "Transformers"-less 2012. 17. "Martha Marcy May Marlene"
The footage builds and builds its claustrophobic tension, finally giving way to John Hawkes' homespun singer/songwriter tuneage, which somehow still doesn't allow you any catharsis, any chance just to catch your breath: All is not well in Elizabeth Olsen's world. And it's simply addicting to watch. 16. "The Woman in Black"
The tagline could have been, "Abandon hope, all ye Muggles who enter here." The first full trailer for Daniel Radcliffe's first post-"Harry Potter" film was simple and creepy and effective — and unlike anything the boy wizard has ever encountered. 15. "Red Tails"
The second trailer starts off a little hokey, but it soon morphs into a shoot-'em-up dogfight between the Tuskegee Airmen and the Axis powers. Every piece of American history should come wrapped in such fiery pop-culture packaging. 14. "Devil's Double"
Torture, guns, chicks in bikinis, Dominic Cooper doing double duty as wide-eyed innocent and psychotic tyrant — what else can one ask for in a trailer? 13. "Super 8"
While our favorite "Super 8" trailer dropped in 2010, the one J.J. Abrams unleashed this past March — with its classic movie-monster intrigue and Spielbergian patina — was still pretty kick-ass. If only the film itself had lived up to the potential of these early looks. 12. "Drive"
In a word: cool. In a few more: awesome score, awesome car chases, awesome hints at violence, awesome performance by Ryan Gosling. Mainly, though: cool as sh--. 11. "John Carter"
After checking out this trailer, we'd gladly jet off to Mars and battle a few of Edgar Rice Burroughs' baddies if it meant catching an early screening of this sci-fi epic. 10. "American Reunion"
We didn't realize we actually missed Jim and his randy pals until we glimpsed the goofball and his flute-loving wife separately, secretly pleasuring themselves to R. Kelly's "Bump N' Grind." 9. "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance"
Nicolas Cage pees fire. He f---ing pees fire and says it feels awesome. When do tickets go on sale? 8. "Like Crazy"
One of the best movies at Sundance became the hands-down finest trailer for a romantic drama in 2011, capturing all the beauty and sadness and magic that echoes between Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones in the film. 7. "Rise of the Apes"
Anyone mocking the idea of bringing back those damn dirty apes with James Franco in tow was roundly silenced when the teaser dropped in April and we peeped Andy Serkis' Caesar and his ilk unleashing simian fury on San Francisco. 6. "X-Men First Class"
Was it the sizzling score? The historical weight imbued by JFK's voice-over? The quick looks at all those mutants? Every single frame in which Michael Fassbender was onscreen? It was all of it and more that made this "X-Men" trailer one of the most epic of the year. 5. "The Hunger Games"
After the most teaser-y of teaser trailers debuted at the MTV Video Music Awards, Lionsgate came through with a ton of footage in November: districts, tributes, games-makers, the Hunger Games arena and three teens looking to swipe the throne of tween obsession-dom from Edward, Bella and Jacob. 4. "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo"
The feel-bad movie of Christmas gave us zero dialogue, oodles of fresh looks without anything so troublesome as context getting in the way, and Trent Reznor and Karen O's cover of "Immigrant Song." Oh, and chills: it gave us chills. 3. "Snow White and the Huntsman"
Our expectations were not high. So let us apologize to Kristen Stewart and all who are involved with this adaptation: Well done, folks! Sweeping in scale and containing some truly creative visual effects (huge crows splintering into hundreds of smaller crows, an anthropomorphic golden mirror), the trailer already would have been a 2011 highlight on its own merits. But when the silly trailer for "Mirror, Mirror," a competing Snow White flick, dropped days later, we had to revise our expectations for "Huntsman": This is how you adapt a centuries-old fairy tale for the 21st-century multiplex. 2. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2"
Sure, we whooped it up to "Woman in Black." But the final "Deathly Hallows, Part 2" trailer? That sucker was not only the best "Deathly Hallows" trailer, it was arguably the best trailer of the entire franchise. 1. "The Dark Knight Rises"
This teaser should be encased in glass and studied at every studio in Hollywood as the perfect way to build excitement, deliver what core fans wants and yet not give away the whole shebang — and leave everyone dying to see more, more, more. There is simply no question: This was the best trailer of 2011, and we have a feeling it's teasing what will be the best movie of 2012. 'Hop' Skips To Top Of Box-Office For Second Straight Week

Russell Brand's Easter bunny film stayed energized to finish in front of the English comedian's debuting 'Arthur.'By Ryan J. Downey "Hop" Photo: Universal "Hop" leapt over the competition to become the first movie of 2011 to enjoy two consecutive weeks at #1 on the box-office tally over the weekend. Featuring Russell Brand as the voice of the Easter Bunny, the kids' flick successfully thumped four new movies: "Hanna," "Soul Surfer," "Your Highness" and Brand's own "Arthur." All figures are according to studio estimates released on Sunday. The $12.6 million opening for English comedian Brand's remake of the 1981 comedy "Arthur" was no match for the $21.6 million collected by the live-action/animated hybrid "Hop," which has earned a total of $68.1 million since its premiere. Neither film is a hit with critics, with both garnering just a 24-percent approval rating, according to Rotten Tomatoes, which compiles reviews from major film columnists across the country. The first "Arthur" earned original star Dudley Moore an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of an alcoholic millionaire and grossed $95.5 million, which is equivalent to $260 million in 2011 when you adjust for ticket-price inflation. The new version, which co-stars Helen Mirren (who hosted "Saturday Night Live" over the weekend) and Jennifer Garner, doesn't seem likely to come close to the original's success. And the remake's debut is far behind the $17.6 million generated by the opening weekend of last year's "Get Him to the Greek," which co-starred Brand alongside Jonah Hill. Saoirse Ronan, who earned a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination at age 13 for her role in "Atonement," plays a young assassin in "Hanna," which came in at #3 on the box-office chart with a $12.3 million take. Joe Wright, who directed both "Atonement" and "Hanna," told Movieline that he sees his latest film as an authentic girl-power alternative to the "incredibly sexist" recent release "Sucker Punch." Film critics seemed to agree. Wright's movie enjoys a 71-percent score on the Tomatometer, while director Zack Snyder's ("300") "Sucker Punch" sit with 21 percent and fell from the box office's top 10 this weekend, earning just $2.1 million for a $33.9 million total. Ronan, who also known for her co-starring role in director Peter Jackson's "The Lovely Bones," has been cast in the same filmmaker's much anticipated adaptation of "The Hobbit." "American Idol" winner and country megastar Carrie Underwood made her film debut with a small role as a Hawaiian church pastor in "Soul Surfer," based on the true story of professional surfer Bethany Hamilton who lost most of one arm in a shark attack at age 13 but was back on her board a month later. The movie, which acts as something of a cinematic companion to Hamilton's autobiography published by MTV Books, debuted at #4 after earning $11.1 million. Reviews have been split almost evenly for the flick. " 'Soul Surfer' takes [a] story of complex emotions, determination and faith and turns it into overly simplistic mush," wrote Christy Lemire of the Associated Press, although Entertainment Weekly's Owen Gliberman said the movie, "while formulaic in design," is both "authentic" and "heartfelt." "Your Highness" was the weekend's biggest bomb. Despite putting Oscar winner Natalie Portman and Oscar nominee James Franco alongside "Eastbound and Down" comedian and co-writer Danny McBride in a sword-and-sorcery adventure laced with modern stoner humor, the movie opened with just a $9.5 million take and scored just a 25-percent positive average with critics. Director David Gordon Green worked with Franco on another stoner comedy, "Pineapple Express," in addition to his role as a director and producer on McBride's popular HBO comedy series, "Eastbound." Green told MTV News that there are a couple of choice deleted scenes from "Your Highness" he'd like to put on the DVD, where the film may find a bigger audience. Small-budget horror flick "Insidious" made $9.7 million in its second weekend of release for a total of $27 million. Its $1.5 million budget isn't much more than that the budget for the original "Saw," which — like "Insidious" — was directed by James Wan. "Source Code" isn't likely to earn huge numbers, but it boasts the distinction of being the year's second-best-reviewed film (just behind Paul Giamatti's "Win Win") and was #7 on the weekend box-office tally with $9 million for a two week total of $28.6 million. "Hangover" co-star Bradley Cooper's "Limitless" made another $5.6 million for a $64.3 million total. "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules" was #9 with $4.8 million for a $45.4 million total. "The Lincoln Lawyer," the well-received drama that Matthew McConaughey says he took a pay cut to appear in, rounded out the top 10 with $4.6 million for a $46.4 million total. This weekend's new releases include campy and self-aware ensemble horror sequel "Scream 4"; the latest animated animal movie from the makers of "Ice Age," "Rio" (which already opened well in some international markets); and director Robert Redford's post-Civil War drama, "The Conspirator." Check out everything we've got on "Arthur," "Hanna" and "Soul Surfer." For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com. Beastie Boys Unleash Celeb-Packed 'Fight For Your Right Revisited' Trailer

Danny McBride, Will Ferrell, Jack Black, Seth Rogen, Elijah Wood and John C. Reilly star as past and future Beastie Boys.By Gil Kaufman Seth Rogen, Elijah Wood and Danny McBride in the "Fight For Your Right Revisited" trailer Photo: Capitol Records Adam Horowitz must throw some epic pool parties. That's one of the major takeaways from the two-minute trailer released on Thursday for the Beastie Boys' celebrity-packed short film, "Fight for Your Right Revisited." The trailer dropped just as fans got their second taste of Beastie goodness from the group's upcoming Hot Sauce Committee Part Two album (due out May 3), the funktastic throwback jam, "Make Some Noise." One of the short's stars, "Your Highness" star Danny McBride, broke down the action for MTV News a few months ago at Sundance, dishing on his portrayal of B-Boy MCA alongside Elijah Woods' Ad-Rock and Seth Rogen's Mike D after the film's debut. But even his description of the demented action in the film that chronicles what happened to the Beasties after the events of the original "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party)" video in 1987 couldn't prepare fans for the window-smashing, F-bomb dropping, "Wait, was that ...?" action in the finished product. Among the other celebs popping up in the clip: Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, Jack Black, Rainn Wilson, Rashida Jones, Jason Schwartzman, Ted Danson, Steve Buscemi, Stanley Tucci, Susan Sarandon, Chloë Sevigny, Will Arnett and a "Back to the Future"-era DeLorean. You can expect a bit more wattage in the final product, which will also feature bits from "The Hangover Part II" star Zach Galifianakis, Orlando Bloom, Amy Poehler, Alicia Silverstone, Maya Rudolph, David Cross, Kirsten Dunst and Laura Dern. Based on the trailer for the 30-minute short film, Reilly, Ferrell and Black play the old-school version of the pioneering rap trio, facing off against their young doppelgangers in a street battle for rap supremacy. "We bring a super-fresh, old-school throwdown dance contest from the future," challenges Ferrell as McBride drops a motherf'in bomb and kicks some not-so-fresh moves on a black-and-white linoleum break mat set up in the middle of the street. Along the way, bodega windows are smashed, many cans of beer are sprayed into the fisheye lens and, in a tip of the limo driver's cap to one of Ferrell's most beloved "Saturday Night Live" skits, the jelly-bellied funnyman is seen at the end of the trailer smiling into the camera while hitting a cowbell. Based on the full screening in January, the 30-minute film is part music video, part improv-heavy comedy. It begins directly after the conclusion of the '87 video, with the Beasties crawling out of the raging apartment party in a cloud of smoke, the original tune playing in the background. They head down the stairs and immediately run into the parents of the kids whose party they crashed. Sarandon and Tucci play the parents, who seem dumbfounded by the rappers' antics. From there Rogen, Wood and McBride head out onto the New York City streets — the film was apparently shot in three days on the Warner Bros. lot in Los Angeles — looking to keep the party going. "It felt super cool," McBride told us earlier. "The moment you start rapping into a fisheye lens, you realize you've been training for it your whole life." What did you think of the "Fight" trailer?
